The Duo Teresa Carreño is one of the leading Venezuelan ensembles in the UK. They formed in 2005 with recitals in Switzerland, England and Venezuela.Their wide repertoire includes most of the classical and romantic masterpieces for cello and piano, but also, they are passionate about promoting contemporary and Latin American repertoire that has been unjustly neglected. The Duo Teresa Carreño won in 2008 the 'Concordia Foundation Award' being invited to perform in prestigous venues such as St James's Piccadilly and St Martin-in-the Fields. Recent highlights include staggering performances at the 1st Latin-American Piano Festival in London, the Exmouth Concert Series and St George's Bloomsbury Church.
The ensemble takes its name and inspiration from a renowned Venezuelan pianist, who was considered one of the greatest in the world at the end of the 19th century. Teresa Carreño met and worked with some of the leading European musicians and composers of her time such as Rossini, Liszt, Rubinstein and Brahms.
In Venezuela and the UK, they have performed in prestigious Festivals and concert venues such as Festival y Academia Nuevo Mundo and Humboldt Association (Venezuela), Bloomsbury Arts and Music Festival, Cheltenham Town Hall. They have recently made their Germany debut concert in the St. Matthaus Kirche (Kulturforum, Berlin), with an acclaimed response from the audience and critics. As Venezuelans, they are privileged to work with El Sistema, both as performers and teachers in different parts of the country.
ANA LAURA MANERO, PIANO
A musician of considerably emotional intensity, the Cuban/Venezuelan pianist Ana Laura Manero is a passionate performer and teacher. As well as developing her professional performing career as a soloist and chamber musician, she is making a great success as Head of Keyboard at Sherborne Girls' School. She graduated in 2006 from the Royal College of Music, with a full tuition fees scholarship supported by The Man Group and the Gordon Galway Stone Memorial Award. In july 2008,she completed the Masters in Advance Performance degree with Distinction at the same institution, with the support of the Irene Hanson Scholar and the Gordon Calway Memorial Award and under the musical guidance of ProfessorJohn Blakely.
Ana Laura is a prize winner of many National and International Piano Competitions: Amadeo Roldán National Piano Competition (Cuba), II National Competition for Young Soloists (Venezuela), The Pinault International Piano Tape Competition (USA) Silvia Einsenstein National Piano Competition (Venezuela) and the Concordia Foundation Award 2008. At the age of 13, Ana Laura made her orchestral debut with the Orquesta Filarmonica Nacional in Caracas, Venezuela. In April 2001, she performed the Third Piano Concerto by Serguei Prokofiev with the Simon Bolivar Youth Symphony Orchestra at the inaugural concert of the III Festival IUDEM Teresa Carreño, in Caracas Venezuela. As a soloist and chamber musician, she has played extensively in England and Venezuela in venues such as St. Jamess Piccadilly, Steinway Hall, Banco Mara Auditorium, Humboldt Association and Teatro Teresa Carreño.
She started to play the piano at the early age of five in her home country Cuba. During her formative years, she was taught by Professors Teresita Junco, Elena Salámova and Igor Lavrov. She has also participated in Master Classes given by world-renowned pianists such as Georges Pludemacher, Barry Douglas, Joseph Banowetz and Frank Fernandez.
ARTURO SERNA, CELLO
‘A strong, confident and engaging performer who always gives his very best’, Arturo Serna have a busy career as performer and teacher. He started his musical studies in the System of Youth and Children Orchestras of Venezuela (FESNOJIV).
Recent highlights include concerts at the Royal Festival Hall, Cadogan Hall, 100Club and Fort Macleod International Festival in Canada. Arturo is part of the the Foyle Future Firsts Apprenticeship Scheme of the London Philharmonic Orchestra 2010-2011. He has performed as soloist and chamber and orchestral musician he has performed in Venezuela, USA, Spain, Switzerland, Mexico, France, England, Czech Republic, Poland and Canada. He also has broadcasted for Radio and Television in Venezuela, Radio Suisse Romande and for BBC Radio 3. Currently, Arturo is in Trial with the BBC Orchestra of Wales and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
In 2010, Arturo finished recently his Postgraduate studies at the Trinity College with merit. In 2008 he was awarded the Diploma in Music Performance with distinction at Geneva Music Conservatoire. He also holds diplomas from the Conservatoire de Musique de Perpignan and the Conservatoire de Musique de Toulouse.
Arturo Serna is prize winner at the I Latin-American Cello Competition Carlos Prieto (2000), the Oxford Music Festival Competition 2008’, the Concordia Foundation Award 2008 and the ‘Audience Prize at the Cavatina Chamber Music Competition 2009’.
